Career Highlights

1967 Commenced square dancing in England.

1968 Immigrated with his family to Western Australia, arriving November 1968.

Joined the White Gum Valley Square Dance Club; the only Club in operation in Western Australia at the time.

1969 Commenced calling at the Carlisle Square Dance Club and took over as Caller when the resident caller retired.

1970 The Carlisle Club cessed and a new Club Shanondoahs was formed in May 1970, with Steve as the Caller. Remained as Caller until the Club ceased in 1992.

1975 Foundation member and Caller for Southsiders Square Dance Club. Remained as Caller until the Club ceased in 1992.

1970s Formed the Western Twirlers demonstration square dance team to promote square dancing. The Group ceased in 1980.

Mid 1970s commenced calling interstate.

1979 Inaugural member Australian Callers Federation.

1985 Convenor 26th Australian National Square Dance Convention, Perth Western Australia.

1992 Formed Turner Tempos Square Dance Club and Became a full-time caller.

1993 Purchased a square dance supplies business and commenced production of a monthly new release tape service for callers.

1995 Formed record label “Aussie Tempos”.

1999 Moved to Buderim, Queensland, to take up a position at the Sunshine Coast Square Dance Centre.

2004 Returned to Perth.

2007 Took up position as Caller for the Square Dance Society of WA beginners’ course program.

Club Involvement

Steve has been active at Club level since 1969 in the role of a Club caller.
He has been the Caller for –

Shanandoahs (1970 to 1992)

Southsiders (1975 to 1992)

Turner Tempos (1992 to 1998).

He also called regularly for the Swan Swingers and Road Runners Square Dance Clubs when these Clubs were in existence.

Since his return to Perth in 2004, Steve has maintained his service to Club’s by assisting Club Callers and standing-in when these Callers are unavailable.

 

State Involvement

Steve has served as a member of the Square Dance Society of WA –

Management Committee (1994 to 1997).

International Square Dance Festival Committee (1997 to 1998).

Steve has been strongly involved with the Callers Association of WA and has served in numerous positions on that body including –

President (1973 to 1981 and 1988 to 1990).

Vice-President.

Training Officer (various times totaling 10 years and 2007 to current).

Reporter/Librarian (1981 to 1984 and 2004 to 2007).

State Co-ordinator for the Australian Callers Federation.

Steve is currently teaching beginners as part of the Square Dance Society of WA Beginners Course program. This program commenced in 2007.

National Involvement

Steve was an inaugural member of Australian Callers Federation and has maintained his involvement continuously since then.
He has served as –

Board Member.

News & Notes/Callerlink Editor (1982 to 1987) – Inaugural Editor.

Callerlink Co-editor (1992 to 1993).

President (1998 to 2001 ).

WA State Co-ordinator.

Steve was a member of the Australian National Square Dance Conventions Board
