Square Dancing levels
Modern square dancing is structured around a progressive series of programs, each adding more calls and complexity:
- Basic: Entry-level program with ~50 calls. Focuses on foundational movements and timing.
- Mainstream: Adds ~17 more calls to Basic. This is the standard level for most club dances.
- Plus: Introduces ~30 additional calls, often involving more intricate formations and transitions.
- Advanced (A1 & A2): Requires strong memorization and quick response. Includes concepts like phantom dancers and complex formations.
- Challenge (C1–C4): Highly technical and mentally demanding. Dancers must master abstract concepts and execute precise choreography.
Each level builds on the previous one, and dancers typically progress through classes or workshops. In Australia, these levels are widely used across clubs and conventions.
