About
I first started square dancing in April 1965 at my local church hall at Toombul in Brisbane. When this club folded, I then danced at Sandgate with Peter Johnson (where I met Leighton) and also at Milton with the Bar-K-Ramblers (now known as Bar-K Circle W) Square Dance Club where Bernie Kennedy was the caller.
Leighton and I had many great trips with Bernie teaching square dancing in country towns such as Miles, Moonie and Tara. With Bernie and a few other dancers (Leighton included), I attended my first National Convention in 1967.
Leighton and I married in 1969 and had two children, Leigh and Stephen. After two years break, we started back dancing with Peter Johnson and the Salad Bowl Squares, where we still dance now with Jason Dean.
We have always been interested in the clubs we have attended and as a result we were Committee Members at Bar-K-Ramblers for many years. At Salad Bowl Squares, I was Secretary for many years and held the position of Treasurer for two years. Leighton and I have each been awarded a Life Membership of the Club.
I was Secretary for the 40th Australian National Square Dance Convention in Brisbane in 1999 and for this effort I was presented with a .. Role of Honour Award” by the Square Dancing Society of Queensland Inc. I was also Secretary for the 44th Australian National Square Dance Convention held in Caloundra in 2003.
I am currently the Librarian and State Review Editor for the Square Dancing Society of Queensland Inc.; the Queensland Delegate for the National Square Dance Society of Australia; and Secretary of the Australian Advanced Square Dance Association.
Leighton and I, as Co-Convenors of the 49th Australian National Square Dance Convention, are looking to a great Convention in 2008.
