SQUARES AROUND VICTORIA

Squares Around Victoria is the official publication of the Victorian Square Dancing Association Inc. Affectionately known as “The SAV”, it has been a cherished part of Victoria’s square dancing community since its inception in 1967.

Originally published 10 times a year, The SAV transitioned to a monthly publication in 2018, reflecting the ongoing activity within the square dancing scene.

Below is an archive of over 400 back issues that we’ve been able to collect and preserve, offering a historical record of square dancing in Victoria, Australia.

Preserving the Legacy of Square Dancing in Victoria

The scanning and posting of archival issues to our website began many years ago as a passionate initiative led by Adrian Brown and Kevin Thomas.
Tragically, Adrian and his beautiful family were lost in the “Black Saturday Bushfires,” along with many original copies of the SAV.

Since that fateful day, Kevin has carried the torch, continuing the work we believe Adrian would have wanted: to preserve the vibrant history of Square Dancing in Victoria. We’re proud to share the progress made so far.

Thanks to the dedication of many generous contributors, we’ve been able to scan and upload a growing archive of back issues for everyone to enjoy. A special thank you goes to Philip Leydon and Philip Aslanidis, whose collections have filled in several key gaps and brought years of history back into view.

We’re still searching for early editions from 1976 to 1993. If you have access to any of these issues—or know someone who might—your contribution would be invaluable in helping us complete this historical record.

Together, we’re keeping the spirit of Square Dancing alive for future generations.
