About
David & Margaret Smythe, and their son Andrew, live at Golden Beach on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. David and Margaret commenced Square Dancing in Brisbane in 1973. It was May in the same year that David commenced calling, and the Sunset Squares Club was initiated. On their transfer to Caloundra with David’s work as a Public Servant, they commenced a second club, The Lighthouse Squares in Feb 1980. David regularly teaches and calls all Square Dance Programs through to Advanced. Since 1982, David has regularly taught and cued Round Dancing.
David has been involved with the Queensland Callers Association since its formation in 1979. He has served as a past Vice-President, and a past Secretary, and is currently the Caller Training Officer for the State Association. In 1988 David was accredited by the Q.C.A. as a Caller Coach, reflecting his background as a trained teacher, and adult staff trainer. David was awarded the QCA’s Scroll of Honour at the 22nd State Convention in Caloundra by the executive of the QCA. This is only the second recipient of this award – the other being the late Eric Wendell.
David has been a Board Member of the Australian Callers’ Association since 1984, and was its President from 1987 to 1991. Since 1992, he has been the A.C.F.’s State Coordinator for Queensland. He is currently on four A.C.F. sub-committees. He is a recipient of their “Silver Microphone Award”.
David has been an accredited member of CALLERLAB since 1988 and is a recipient of their “Quarter Century Award”. He was the Chairman of the Organising Subcommittee for the first CALLERLAB Mini-Lab held at the Gold Coast in 1990. Currently David is on four CALLERLAB Committees.
In July 1991, David left his job and pursued a full-time professional calling career. He has called in all Australian States and New Zealand, at National Conventions and Festivals. David was the convenor of both the 17th and 22nd Qld State Conventions and he is the Co-convenor of the 44th Australian National Convention to be held in Caloundra in 2003.
