About
My introduction to square dancing occurred in1963 in Brisbane when my Scout Leader organised a square dance. The caller was Peter Johnson. This developed into a weekly dance that was later known as The Teen Twirlers.
I met my future wife, Sandra, at Peter Johnson’s club at Sandgate. In the latter part of 1965, I commenced dancing with Bernie Kennedy at Bar-K-Ramblers at Milton where I met up again with Sandra and we were married in 1969. With Bernie, I attended my first National Convention in 1966 in Adelaide. Sandra and I both became members of the club and I held positions of Vice President and Treasurer. We remained members of the club until the birth of our second child, Stephen, in 1976.
We returned to square dancing in 1978 with Peter Johnson and the Salad Bowl Squares and we are still dancing at Salad Bowl Squares. During this time, I have held the offices of President and Treasurer and was awarded with a life membership of the club.
I am currently the President of the Square Dancing Society of Queensland Inc., a position I have held since being elected in November 1996. I am also Vice President of the National Square Dance Society for Australia, a position I have held for the past two years. Another position I have held for two years is the Coordinator of the Australian Advanced Square Dance Association.
At the 40th Australian National Square Dance Convention, I held the position of Venue Manager. When it was decided to hold the 44th National Convention in Caloundra, I was pleased to accept the position of Co-Convenor and I look forward to meeting you all in “Caloundra by the Sea in 2003”.
