Brian began square dancing in **Newcastle in 1960**, and by the end of that same year he had entered an amateur callers’ contest — the moment that set the course for the rest of his life. In **1961**, he began calling for the Newcastle YMCA Square Dance Club, marking the official start of a remarkable callingcareer.

A Career of Influence and Innovation
Throughout his life, Brian:
– Founded and led the B-bar-H Square Dance Club, one of Australia’s longest-running clubs.
– Called weekly and monthly for multiple clubs across NSW, covering levels from Basic to A2
– Recorded over 100 square dance records, including instructional material used in Australian schools.
– Conducted “Caller Schools and Clinics across Australia and New Zealand from 1967 onward.
-Served as an active and respected member of **CALLERLAB**, contributing to caller education and program development.
-Travelled extensively as a featured caller at festivals, conventions, and special events. 

His recordings, teaching materials, and choreography influenced generations of dancers and callers. Many callers across Australia credit Brian as a mentor, teacher, or inspiration.

Australia’s FUN Caller
Brian was widely known as “Australia’s FUN” Caller”, a title he earned not through marketing, but through the genuine joy he brought to every dance floor.
His philosophy was simple: square dancing should be accessible, welcoming, and above all, enjoyable.

He had a rare ability to make even the simplest basics feel fresh and engaging.
Dancers often remarked that Brian could fill a hall with laughter and energy without ever losing clarity or control.

Brian Hotchkies passed away 11 February 2026, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to shape Australian square dancing for decades to come.
